I remember Benny

Hello! This week we continue our work on melody in the Musicianship Workshop space. Next month I plan to continue looking at melody but also broaden the scope to look at other related topics. If you'd like to join us, please become a Gold-level member of the Outside Shore Music community, then pop over to the workshop to see what we're up to and get started!

This week also marks the passing of one of the most respected jazz musicians of our time, saxophonist Benny Golson. Although I never had the opportunity to work with him, I was able to see Benny perform, and I had a close indirect connection to him through mutual friends. More than anything, Benny was a melodicist, so it is fitting that I am featuring some of his music this week.

MuseScore Café

This week in the MuseScore Café with Marc Sabatella, we focus on how MuseScore can be used in educational settings. If you are a teacher, or a student, you will find MuseScore Studio allows you to create almost anything you could want - worksheets, flash cards, theory exercises, "big note" song sheets, display on interactive whiteboards, musical examples to incorporate into text documents, and more. And musescore.com is an amazing resource for schools as well. Most of the features we will look at are equally useful to people who are not involved in education.

The free MuseScore Café is live on Wednesday at 12:30 PM Eastern (16:30 GMT, or 17:30 during the winter months), and you can access past episodes in the archive.

Tip of the Week

MuseScore Studio can automatically turn sequences of empty measures into multimeasure rests, but the shortcut for toggling them on and off has changed from M to Ctrl+Shift+M. In this video post, I demonstrate how multimeasures work, why you will rarely need the shortcut, why it was changed, and how to change it back if you like.

Music Master Class

This week in the Music Master Class with Marc Sabatella, we continue our exploration of melody by looking at music created for the projects in the Musicianship Workshop space.

The free Music Master Class is live on Thursday at 12:30 PM Eastern (16:30 GMT, or 17:30 during the winter months), and you can access past episodes in the archive.

In Theory

Benny Golson was one of the all-time great jazz tenor saxophonists, and until his recent death at age 95 he was one of the elder statesman of jazz - a vital connection to the history of the music. He was an extremely melodic improviser and composer, with many of his compositions becoming jazz standards. In this video post, I discuss his use of melodic development in one of his most famous and most beautiful tunes, I Remember Clifford.

Until next time, keep making music!
Marc Sabatella

Hello! As September gives way to October and the leaves start changing here in the Northern hemisphere (and start appearing in the Southern), there are a few changes here in the world of Outside Shore Music also that I'd like to let you know about. First, as I have indicated recently, I have now enabled a new "gamification" feature for the Outside Shore Music community site. The idea is to incentivize engagement - and yes, I know how buzzwordy that sounds, but it's an accurate description....

Hello! MuseScore 4.4.2 is now available, fixing most of the issues reported recently. As usual, automatic updates will follow in a couple of days or so, but you can update now via Muse Hub or via musescore.org. For more on what has changed, see the announcement on musescore.org. One thing to note is that this update does not fix the issue some people with multiple monitors are experiencing with popups appearing on the wrong display. There will be a 4.4.3 coming later to deal with...
