Hello! As I mentioned last week, I'm making some changes to how subscriptions work in the Outside Shore Music community. Those of you who have accounts on the site but no active subscriptions should already have received a message from me regarding this. Those of you with active subscriptions are not affected. This week in the Musicianship Workshop space, we continue our exploration of building completed compositions from our melodies, and we will be focusing on analyzing some of our favorite pieces in terms of form and other criteria. This week in the MuseScore Café with Marc Sabatella, we will take a look at the process of cleaning up scores that were imported from other software or from older versions of MuseScore. The goal is to create scores that look and sound their best, and that use notation correctly so that the scores also make sense when exported to other formats such as MusicXML or braille.

Tip of the Week

Slurs and ties look very similar - indeed, practically identical, although there are some very subtle differences. Yet they have very different meanings, and trying to use one where the other is meant seldom goes well. In this video post, I discuss the differences between slurs and ties as they relate to MuseScore.

In Theory

A musical composition of any length usually contains multiple melodic themes. Often, there are surprisingly few such themes even in longer pieces - the bulk of the piece is spent developing a small amount material. In this video post, I demonstrate how a typical classical composition uses just two or three themes to build a longer form.
