Tip of the Week

One question I often get is, how do you set the tempo for a score? Perhaps because expectations are set by audio or MIDI software, people sometimes expect this to be a setting you make somewhere separate from the score itself. But just like you control volume by adding actual dynamic marks to the score, you control tempo by adding actual tempo markings. In this video post, I show you how to add a tempo marking to set the tempo of your score.

In Theory

Contrapuntal music often makes use of imitation - repeating a single motif or longer theme immediately after the initial statement, usually in another part. The repeated passage can be at the same pitch, or it can be transposed higher or lower. In this video post, I show why imitation at the fifth - transposing the passage a fifth higher or fourth lower - is especially useful.
