Some "hacks"

Hello! Thanks to those of you who informed me of an issue with some of the links in last week's newsletter. A couple of those links were still using my old site domain name masteringmusescore.com instead of outsideshore.com, and while I had originally set things up so the old addresses would forward to the new ones, this actually broke last week. I have since fixed this, both so the links in the newsletter go to the new site, and so links to the old site forward automatically again. At least...

Hello! This week we should see an update to MuseScore - now being rebranded as MuseScore Studio to help differentiate the notation software from the website and mobile apps. MuseScore Studio 4.3 adds a few interesting features and fixes many bugs, and I will be highlighting this release in the MuseScore Café. BTW, the mobile apps also just got an update, finally (!) supporting MuseScore 4 files.I’m also launching a second Office Hours session at a somewhat later time, to try to accommodate...

Hello! Thanks for all the great discussion in last week's MuseScore Café about ideas for building a high-quality score library. I'm still not exactly sure how we will proceed but stay tuned for more on this topic, as there definitely seems to be interest in the topic! This week in Practical Counterpoint, we continue our work on imitation. Music Master Class will feature some really interesting short "inventions" created by students in the course! Mastering MuseScore If you are interested in...

Hello, hello! This week in Practical Counterpoint, we begin the section on imitation, so you can look forward to hearing much about that. This week I also am starting the ball rolling towards crowd-sourcing a library of high-quality scores in MuseScore format. We'll discuss this during Wednesday's MuseScore Café, and hopefully return to the subject in the weeks ahead. My goal is to eventually have a reliable way of finding the "best" MuseScore editions of any given piece for further study....

Hello! In the Practical Counterpoint course, we're moving on to working with three or more parts, which has implications both for the types of textures and harmonies you can create. One of the most interesting things that should come from this is a realization of just how much of what there is to know about harmony can be learned - and indeed, was originally developed - through the study of counterpoint. Those of you in the course will be experiencing this first-hand, but as always, everyone...

Hello! This week marks the first day of spring, and after the snowstorm we just experienced here in Colorado a few days ago, I'm ready! In the Practical Counterpoint course, we are continuing our exploration of so-called "species counterpoint". This is a subject that is often taught with little or no reference to any actual context, making it seem like an abstract concept with no relevance to real music. My aim is always to focus on the practical value of the theory, and species counterpoint...
